Every washing machine user is interested in the quality of the laundry being washed. But, the quality does not always depend on the performance of the washing machine and detergents.
When using the machine, a situation may arise where water is drawn back into the tank. To avoid this, a check valve is installed for drain water of the washing machine.
What is a non return valve and its types
A check valve for the washing machine, called antisiphon prevents this and protects the drain system. This small piping element will fit any model of washing machine. Despite the flap, it does not interfere with the water drain in any way. The quality of washing depends on the type of check valve and the manufacturer.
Types of check valve
There are:
- washing valve;
- non-return valve;
- segmental;;
- mortise valve;
- wall-mounted.
They differ from each other in minor ways. But, for example, installing a washing machine model LG will need only segment valve. This type is perfectly disassembled and cleared of various clogs.
The non-disassembled type good option for plumbing with soft waterBut that doesn't mean it will last a long time. It has a life span of about 2-3 years.
If the space between the wall and the back of the washing machine is very narrow narrow spacethen wall valve with its compact and pleasant appearance is a great option.
Its disadvantage is the price, which is quite high.
Insertion device often installed when you want to install direct drain into the sewer pipe.
It got its name from a special incision, in which it is inserted.
If the valve should be installed sink siphonYou can safely consider washing typewhich will fit under any sink.
How the check valve works
Scheme of the valve is not complicated. It represents a certain form of pipe, in which the valve of spring or ball type is installed. This device is installed on the siphon, drain hose or sewer pipe in any place.
During operation, the water from the machine with the pressure enters the anti-siphon and then drains into the sewer. If back pressure appears, the water cannot flow because the check valve mechanism no longer opens. The damper is created by a spring and a rubber membrane. It is these that protect the drain system from dirty water coming in.
If we talk about the ball valve, the function of protection in it is performed by a rubber ball, which serves as a gate. Under the pressure of water, it is pressed against the membrane, and then returns to its place. The ball does not need to be cleaned, as the mechanism itself will do this with the help of special ribs.

Installing a check valve on a washing machine
The check valve has two outlets with different diameters at opposite ends. One end connects to the siphon or to the sewage pipe, and the other connects to the drain hose washing machine. The joints are sealed and this is the end of the installation.
Installation of anti-siphon is not always required. Especially if the washing machine is connected in accordance with the rules and the drain pipe is at the right height. But it happens that for the sake of aesthetic beauty of the room, the drain is placed very close to the floor. Such a decision becomes fatal in the aftermath and there is siphonic effect. This manifests itself in increased washing time, poor quality and increased energy costs.
The check valve for the washing machine on the drain is often included with the appliances, but if it is not available, you will have to buy in cases:
- if the washing machine is directly connected to the drain pipe, which is very low, with no possibility of raising it;
- when the washing machine is connected to the siphon under the sink;
- presence of an unpleasant smell in the washing machine and dirty things after washing.
