Our traditional expectations of the washing machine are clean washed clothes that smell fresh.
Our preference is for fragrant powders and rinses that are pleasant to our sense of smell, but sometimes it happens that all our efforts are in vain: the washing machine suddenly starts to emit a nasty smell.
Sometimes it can be felt only from the appliance, but sometimes, in especially bad situations, the smell of mustiness can be felt in the freshly washed clothes. What after all happened to your washing machine and how to deal with it now?
Tips for removing the bad smell from the washing machine
When an unpleasant smell after washing comes from the laundry, this situation will have to be corrected manually, i.e. rinse the laundry in a basin with conditioner. But here is your "laundry helper" must be thoroughly sorted out. There are quite a few factors, the presence of which provides the appearance of heavy odor in the washing machine.
Mistakes in the use of the washing machine, which become the cause of stink in the washing machine
The most common cause and - the most trivial. The washing machine simply "suffocates" because immediately after washing The owner closes the hatch. Remember, the washing machine needs a certain amount of time to evaporate moisture. Therefore, the machine door should be left open for a couple of hours when you finish washing.

It is important to remember that after each wash there is a need to wipe the rubber seal: water and often small debris remain in its folds. Such a mixture can cause not only a bad smell, but also the appearance of mold, the most common black!
If the mold "grows" powerfully deep into the rubber - replacement of the rubber seal will be required. But mold on the surface of the cuff is easily removed by washing it with dishwashing detergent.
Never turn the washing machine into a basket for storing dirty laundry.
Just imagine: there is high humidity inside the washing machine (first of all, when the machine is poorly dried after washing), and you throw dirty things into it.
Nine not the most likely reasons for washing machine odor
The following causes of musty odor are less common than errors in operation, but they still occur:
- Fiasco with changing the powder or air conditioner. Sometimes a new detergent is the cause of the foul odor, especially if it's not of the best quality. Lumps sticking to the walls of the washing machine: over time, the product does not smell of fragrances, but of some rottenness.
-
Terrible stench in the tank? An excessive amount of laundry detergent or conditioner. The cause of the smell here is almost identical to the first case. The excess adheres to the walls of the tank of the machine and after a while begins to emit a stinky "fragrance".
- The detergent drawer is clogged. Remember that even very good detergents, which are poured into the tray in the required amount, can leave a barely visible film on the walls of the cuvette. Gradually the layer becomes thicker and thicker, and as a consequence, mold stains often appear. It is easy to prevent such a nuisance: it is enough to remove the tray once a month and rinse it well under running warm water.
- Clogged detergent channel. The detergent layers with specks of mold can appear both on the tray and further along the water path, namely in the detergent and conditioner flushing duct. Remove the tray and point a flashlight on it: if you find mold stains, it means you need to do mechanical cleaning. You can do it yourself, armed with a small scrubber, or authorize a specialist to carry out such a procedure. Please note: the most common cause of problems with the detergent channel is a heavy contamination of the tray. Therefore, to prevent such an unpleasantness - you just need to carefully monitor the cleanliness of the tray of your "helper".
- Drain filter clogging. In normal operation, the function of the drain filter is to catch debris, in order to avoid clogging the sewer. In it you can find lost buttons, coins, small parts of children's toys also coarse lint, pieces of thread. The drain filter requires cleaning at least once every six months! Otherwise, the "goodness" stopped by it on the way to the sewer will begin to sour, rot, and as a consequence, exude the "fragrant aroma". In addition, a clogged filter can cause difficult or completely "blocked" outflow of water from the washing machine.
- There is water left in the tank of the machine. It is very little, and you can not see it, but after some time it will begin to "fade". This can be exacerbated if you close the hatch of the washing machine during its "rest". In such a situation, the cause may be the wrong connection of the appliance to the sewer or, if this has never happened before, the problem lies in the failure of the drain pump. In this case, it is preferable to seek qualified assistance.
- The cause of the unpleasant smell can be an old drain hose. On its walls, especially if the product is not of the best quality, often adheres to all kinds of debris and detergent residues, which are then involved in the process of rotting, and as a consequence, cause a stench. Such a hose can try to "resuscitate", i.e. to clean: to do this, it is necessary to "run" an empty washing machine at maximum temperature. When you have carried out such a procedure, and the smell is still there, then you need to replace the hose.
- Fouling on the heating element can be a source of unpleasant odor.
Causes of unpleasant odor in the washing machine This plaque is formed from laundry detergent, lint, trash, as well as impurities in the tap water. Such a "cocktail" is very strongly stuck to the heating element. In such situations, when the washing machine is rarely used or washing is done at a low temperature, such a plaque gets an unpleasant smell. Sometimes this "fragrance" can be at high washing temperatures - in such cases, you can smell the smell of burning. To prevent such an odor, you should periodically use citric acid or special agents to clean the machine. This will help clean the heating element from plaque ("citric acid" can be used by turning on the washing machine with an empty drum at 90 °C). Read the instructions for your washing machine, if it says that the use of chlorine bleach is allowed, then you can turn on an empty wash at 90-95°C with a substance containing chlorine.
- Another reason can be problems with communications in your home. That is, the cause of the stench can be not the washing machine, but the sewage system. If this is the case, the smell will flow not only from the machine, but also from other sources connected to the sewer system.
At the end of this article we would like to draw the attention of washing machine users: be sure to be familiar with the rules included in the instructions and of course follow them! The key to the long life of your appliance is careful and correct use.
Remember, airing, wiping, cleaning washing machinefollow the manufacturer's instructions, and as a result your helper will please you with good work and smells of "alpine mountains", "fresh frosty morning" and not with the stench of swamp.
