Replacing the heater in an Indexit washing machine with their own hands, tips

Washing machine heaterThe heating element is a device that heats the water in the washing machine.

The washing process depends on the water temperature, initially set by you program.

It is such a device as the TEN is able to heat the water in the washing machine to the temperature you need.

Working principle of the heating element

Scale on the heater from hard waterThe water heated by the heating element can be any kind of water, for example if the water is hard, it produces a lot of limescaleThis is not the only reason why your washing machine can break down at any unexpected moment, provided you don't clean it regularly.

This is not the only reason your washing machine can fail. If you notice that the water in your design is not heating up.Then you probably have a broken heating element. You need to urgently check the heating element, and if it is broken, buy another one.

If you want to do it without the help of professionals, you need to know how to change/repair the heating element yourself. Now we will tell you how to check with your own hands the efficiency of the heating element, where it is located and how to understand whether it is broken or not.

The location of the heating element

In order to fix or replace the heating element, you must first know where it is located. There are many different types of washing machines in the world, but mostly the TEN is at the bottom of the tank.

Location of the heater in a washing machineBut you can't get to it easily, although for the most part it depends on the model of your unit. Some designs have the heating element behind the front cover, while others have it behind the back panel. There are cases where the heating element is located on the side, but this is mostly the case with side-loading washing machines.

First, you need to determine where your THEN is located, to do this, remove the back panel and look under the tank on the presence there of this device, if it is there (it is easy to determine, because the heating element as primo, will stand first from the back cover and is fairly easy to remove), you must remove it.

If it is not found behind the back panel of the machine, it is necessary to look behind the front cover. So, the first step we have already overcome. Now you need to pull out the heating element and check whether it is broken or not, and if so, replace it.

In what follows, we will tell you how to do all this one by one, as well as provide two ways to disassemble the washing structure. The first way will be deployed in the case when your heating element will be behind the front panel, and the second way when the unit will be located behind the back cover.

Here are a few rules that are recommended to follow during the disassembly of the structure (does not depend on the model and type of washing machine):

  • Before disassembling the machine we drain itWhen disassembling the washing machine, it is necessary to make sure that the machine is unplugged, if not, then immediately do so by removing the plug from the socket.
  • Drain all the water from the tank before disassembling it, this can be done by using the drain strainer or otherwise use a drain hose. To drain the hose, you need to lower it slightly below the level of the machine.
  • In any case, some water will still remain in the tank, therefore, you need to keep some container and floor cloths nearby.

The preparatory work is done.

A tool for dismantling the washing machineFor future work you will need the following tools:

  • A set of screwdrivers (flat, Phillips, and possibly a Torx);
  • A wrench, maybe a socket wrench or a socket wrench size 8 or 10.

As you can notice, no special tools are required when picking up the washing structure, and it is already clear that it is possible to repair and replace the heating element without any help from specialists.

The THEN, which is located behind the front panel

As already mentioned above, mainly in washing machines FEN is located behind the back panel. Perhaps your washing machine from manufacturers Bosh, Samsung or LG, then behind the back cover, you can only find a power belt, attached to the motor.

In the design of such firms, the heating element is located on the front side (front panel) directly under the drum.

We suggest to do the further work step by step:

  • Remove washing machine top lidThe first step will be to remove the top cover of the washing machine. The cover is held by two screws, which should be unscrewed. Their location is always at the back. The screws should be unscrewed with a flat or Phillips screwdriver, you may need a Torx screwdriver (in a few cases). After unscrewing the screws, gently lift and pull back the cover and you will easily remove it.
  • Second step. You need to remove the detergent box (powders and such). This tray will also be screwed to the machine with two self-tapping screws, which must be unscrewed. On the parallel side of the front panel there is a latch, pulling which you can remove the box.
  • The third step is when you remove the steel hoop. This hoop holds rubber seal on the loading hatch. This ring holds a simple wire spring in place. In order to remove the above elements, you need to stretch this spring a bit, and pull the parts out accordingly.
  • Remove the rubber seal on the washing machine doorFourth step.. Removing the rubber seal.
  • The fifth step will be unscrewing the self-tapping screws located at the front or bottom of the front cover. When you find them and unscrew them, proceed to the removal of the cover. Be careful and attentive when preparing to replace the heating element in the washing machine, because the cover may be attached not only by bolts and self-tapping screws, but also by clips. Therefore, it is better to remove the lid in the following way - just pull it forward a little, and then lower it down.
  • The sixth step. Not far from the hatch is the door lock. There is no need to unscrew and remove it, you just need to disconnect the wires. Now it is possible to remove the cover and proceed to remove the heating element.
  • The seventh step. The heating element is located at the bottom of the tank. On the end of this device you will be able to notice the ground wire, power terminals (two pieces), as well as the connector for the temperature sensor.
  • The eighth step will be to remove the terminals, disconnect the ground wire, and remove the temperature sensor. If you want to connect everything correctly and successfully in the future, it is best to memorize the location of the disconnected wires, write them down or take a picture.
  • Step Nine. All that remains is the nut, which should be unscrewed with a wrench (open-end wrench or socket wrench). You do not have to unscrew the nut all the way. Slightly push the bolt inward, and then you can remove the heating element.
  • Removing and replacing the heater from the washing machineStep ten. To remove it, simply wiggle it up and down and then gently pull it out.
  • Step Eleven .. Need preventive maintenance of the tank.. To do this, simply clean the tank of limescale, detergents and other debris. Now let's move on to the main thing, replacing the heating element.
  • Step 12.. Purchase a new heating element in advance (we advise to use the model you originally had). Insert the new device, having previously connected the temperature sensor to it. If there are guides, you need to get into them and also slip the heating element inside. After that, screw the nut back on while attaching the remaining wires to the THEN, use the photo to show how everything was in place of the last THEN (The photo is about the eighth step).
  • Last, thirteenth step will be the reassembly of the washing machine.

Well, that's it, we have replaced the heating element in the washing machine . The fasteners can be located in absolutely different places, but the principle of operation does not change.

Probably, the replacement of the heating element did not solve your problem, so when disassembling it is necessary to check the heating element itself. Checking the TEN is done with an ohmmeter. If the value is infinite, then the device is burned out, but if not, you need to check the wires for other damage.

FEN, which is located behind the back panel

Washing designs of the manufacturers Indesit and Whirlpool and other similar models, disassemble from the back. Such options are simpler, better and faster.

We will give you the step-by-step work of replacing the heating element in an Indesit washing machine with a back cover:

  • Removing the rear cover on the washing machineFirst step. Unfold the machine with the back cover facing you.
  • The second step will be to unplug the machine and drain the water.
  • Step three. Unscrew the screws with a screwdriver and remove the back cover.
  • Fourth step.. We immediately see our heating element, all that remains is to disconnect the wires.
  • The fifth step is to unscrew the nut (also with a socket or open-end wrench) not all the way in, push the bolt inside and gently pull out the heating element.
  • Disconnect the fan from the washing machineThe sixth step The sixth step is to remove the rubber gasket, it will prevent you from pulling the part out, so loosen it a little bit and pull it out gently.
  • Seventh step. Preventive maintenance of the tank is necessary, in which you will clean it of unnecessary debris, powder and scale, and then Replace the new fanReplace the old heating element with a new one. The sealing rubber can be lubricated with dishwashing detergent before insertion, this is necessary to ensure that the device will fit without obstruction.
  • Eighthand final step is when you connect the wires. Then screw back the back cover and turn the machine towards you with the front panel. Reconnect the machine to the mains, having previously put all the connections back in place. Check the construction for proper operation.

Washing machines with a vertical load must be disassembled from the side. The principle is exactly the same, but the cover that covers the heating element is on one of the sides.

At this is the end of our article. After replacement, your washing machine is ready to take on new heavy tasks of washing things. The process of replacing the THEN device itself is pretty quick and not very hard, as it might have seemed at first glance. You can not be afraid, and safely take the necessary tools to disassemble your design.
